Fire damages Yates County folk art center wood shop
01/12/2009
Yates County, N.Y. - A director at the Rochester Folk Art Guild used a fire extinguisher to put out a blaze at the facility’s wood shop on Sunday evening, Yates County deputies said.

Deputies said that the man, who one resident identified as wood shop director David Barnet, noticed the flames inside of one of the structures at about 5:45 p.m. He quickly called 911 and then used a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze.

The resident, who asked not to be identified, said that no works of art were damaged but the fire blew out a window in the shop.

“The damage appears to be minor and it was quickly brought under control,” she said.

Deputies said the fire damaged the interior wall and the ceiling of the shop, one of several buildings at 1445 Upper Hill Road.

The Middlesex Fire Department and Yates County Fire Investigation Team responded to the scene. The Rushville, Potter and Stanley Fire Departments, along with Middlesex Ambulance were also involved.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

The Rochester Folk Art Guild is an artists colony on a 350-acre farm on East Hill Road.

In July 2005, a steam bath building completely burned to the ground.
