Crews Stop Fire at Chesapeake Save-A-Lot
04/03/2007
Chesapeake, WV - Approximately three fire units were dispatched to a structure fire in the Chesapeake Plaza Monday night. The Chesapeake Fire Department, along with the Fayette Township Volunteer Fire Departments 1 and 2, made their way to the Save-A-Lot grocery store to put out a reported fire in the stock room around 7:30 p.m.
A Burlington resident, who said he was shopping with his fiance in the store at the time of the fire, helped an employee put it out with a fire extinguisher.
"A boy came running out of the back of the store screaming, 'Fire! Fire!,' so I immediately started looking for a fire extinguisher," said Harold Fuller. "The flames were about 6 to 8 feet and the stock room was very hot."
Fuller said he and the employee put out the flames upon the fire department's arrival.
All employees and customers were asked to evacuate the building for safety reasons.
Save-A-Lot District Manager Tom Williams said the fire did minimal damage and it was fortunate that it didn't get any worse.
"Nobody got hurt, which I'm very thankful for," Williams said.
Chesapeake Fire Marshal Bob Wallace said the cause of the fire is unknown, and it is currently under investigation.
